Back dating housing benefit
In any event, it's always best to make your claim as soon as possible.
Don't delay because you can't provide the evidence we need.
To qualify for backdating, you must be able to prove you had good cause for the period you are claiming.
If your request has been successful you will be informed by letter.
If you want us to consider backdating your claim and you have a good reason for not claiming earlier, you must make a request in writing and send it to the Housing Benefit team.
If you qualify for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction (or both), your entitlement will normally be awarded from the Monday after you requested the application form (as long as you return the form within one calendar month).
In some cases the start date of your claim can be backdated for up to one month prior to your claim date.
If you are under 60 and you believe you have good reason for not claiming Housing Benefit at an earlier date, it is important that you tell us straight away, in writing, about this. the dates when you were unable to claim and reasons for this).
