We aren’t fully calling this one a spinoff as there isn’t technically a specific film these characters originally hail from, instead Sony is mining the Spidey universe for characters they can use while Spider-Man works his webbed wonders over for Marvel Studios in the upcoming We don’t really have any details on the film besides the starring characters, who even in the comics don’t have that many interactions apart from being allies to Spider-Man, so it will be interesting to see how this film develops that relationship.There is a bit of controversy regarding seeing these characters – mostly regarding the usage of Venom, whose origin is linked directly to Spidey – without the wall-crawler, but fans of the characters themselves should be excited at the chance to see these two on the big screen, something inclusion in the main Spidey franchise might not have ever seen happen.It recently tapped Tom Hardy to star and Ruben Fleischer to direct. Prince-Bythewood is best known as the writer and director of the beloved 2000 film “Love & Basketball,” starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, and the 2008 drama “The Secret Life of Bees.” She more recently helmed the 2014 romantic drama “Beyond the Lights,” which earned an Oscar nomination for best original song.Lately, she’s been primarily focused on TV, most notably on the Fox limited series “Shots Fired” (which she created with her husband, Reggie Rock Bythewood).It’s unclear exactly what Sony Pictures is planning, but a cinematic Spider-Verse appears to be developing independently of the MCU.

As for Black Cat and Silver Sable, the former is pretty much Marvel’s version of Catwoman (right down to the flirty/antagonistic relationship with the hero), while the latter is a mercenary who has been known to work with and against Spider-Man from time to time.
Together, they’re probably entertaining enough to carry a movie without Spidey, and this will give this world another (desperately needed) female-led superhero movie. The THR story doesn’t say if it will overtly connect to Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it seems likely that it will do what Venom is doing and distance itself from that movie a bit so Sony doesn’t have to deal with Marvel Studios.
